This fun quilt features nine of our common big British birds. The hand embroidered text tells you a fascinating fact about each bird - did you know that Jays bury acorns just like squirrels do? This really is the perfect quilt for any budding ornithologist!

The paper pattern is available to purchase in my shop and has clear, detailed instructions, full size appliqué templates and colour photos to help you. My appliqué blocks were made using my machine drawing method - see sewing tips section for a tutorial - but my designs are suitable for most forms of appliqué.

The piecing is straightforward, with the quarter square triangle blocks adding just enough to make it interesting too. The finished quilt measures 40 x 40 inches, but you could easily double the appliqué blocks to make a bed size quilt. Or, you could combine them with the appliqué blocks from my Small Brown British Birds pattern, as they are the same size.
