This charming piece of textile art features a whale and her calf heading safely out to sea. The traditional feather spray quilting was designed to echo the rolling waves.

My appliqué whales were made using my free machine drawing method (see sewing tips section for a tutorial), but my designs are suitable for most forms of appliqué. The paper pattern is available to purchase in my shop and has clear, detailed instructions, full size appliqué templates and a drawing of a traditional feather spray for you to trace and quilt.

I found the lovely old clock face in a car boot sale and couldn’t resist adding it to the picture. If you can’t find one however, you could try embroidering one, or you could paint a button.

‘Whale of a Time’ is a delightful little project which can be used in many ways: frame it or place it in the centre of a medallion quilt or sew it onto a cushion… the choice is yours.
