1 Day Workshop - Free-Motion Stitching and Fusible Appliqué

In this fun workshop I will give you an introduction to fusible appliqué free-motion stitching with your sewing machine. These are my favourite techniques and a really important part of how I achieve my quilting style.

In the morning, you will learn how to draw using your sewing machine through a series of fun exercises, no real-life drawing skills are required! In the afternoon, everyone createsa small appliqué picture, walking step by step through the process, piecing a background, making the appliqué and adding a little free-motion stitching and perhaps hand embroidery.

Honestly, no real life drawing skills are required. I will be right there to help you design, draw any templates required and guide you to create your very own unique projects. I look forward to meeting and creating with you!

1 Day Workshop - Quilted memories to cherish

This workshop is about noticing and cherishing the simple things in life and stitching our stories. I will share the inspiration behind my work and my book ‘The Wordsmith’ and share some of the tales that inspired my memory quilt.

We will explore the quilt-as-you-go method and you will learn how I layer techniques such as fusible appliqué, free-motion stitching, hand quilting and embroidery. We will also look at ways to transfer lettering and text to fabric and methods to stitch them.

You will have everything you need to inspire you to begin creating unique pieces inspired by your favourite word, saying, adage, poem, animal, holiday or other story and I will be right there to help you draw, design and create your own family heirloom.

So come, gather your fabrics and threads and stitch with me.

1 Day Workshop - Down Beside the Seaside Wall Hanging

During our one day together, we will learn all the techniques required to create my quirky wall-hanging ‘Down Beside the Seaside’.

There are no straight lines here, just lovely varying width borders surrounding delightful coastal appliqué scenes, with free-motion stitching used to add detail and breathe life into the piece.

This is my favourite technique and a really important part of how I achieve my appliqué and quilting style. I will teach you all my tips and tricks to enable you to confidently create your own thread sketches. Honestly, no real-life drawing skills are required!

In the afternoon, we will review how to do fusible appliqué before piecing a simple landscape and composing a small appliqué picture.

Janet Clare Wildflowers Quilt - 1 Day Workshop

One of the pleasures of walking our dog is stumbling across a little patch of vivid red poppies you were not expecting to see or planning a trip to try and find (with numb toes!) the first snowdrops of the season. My Wildflowers quilt celebrates 12 species, with intricately detailed appliqué and lovely Irish Chain blocks set into a little quilt to enjoy all year round.

In this workshop, we’ll explore choosing fabrics, making fusible appliqué and Irish Chain blocks, how to add character with free-motion machine stitching and hand-embroidered details. While the quilt won’t be completed in a day, you’ll leave with all the skills and techniques you need to finish it at home, along with a copy of the book for reference.
